Planning socket positions begins with a walk through each room. Desks, televisions, bedside lamps, kitchen appliances and air-conditioning controls all have different needs for height and proximity. Marking positions with you beforehand avoids the familiar problem of cables trailing across floors or extension boards stacked behind furniture.

How a socket is added matters as much as where. It may be a replacement of a worn accessory, a spur from an existing point, or a new run from the distribution board.
